Tips and Reminders
for Successful Competition in Florida
-
Daylight Savings time starts on Sunday, April 2—as we “spring forward” YOU WILL LOSE ONE HOUR OF SLEEP.
-
The University of Florida’s campus is HUGE—bring flat, comfortable shoes to walk in.
-
The weather can be a bit erratic—prepare for sunshine and rain and BRING AN UMBRELLA!
-
The weather is much more humid than many of you are accustomed to. Be prepared for your hair’s personal humidity needs. (You’re going to have either straight hair or really frizzy—deal with it!)
-
Be sure to carry water with you at all times. It’s going to be warm and humid and you are going to sweat so you need to stay hydrated.
-
The tournament’s meal plan provides each participant with a declining balance meal card that can be used in the Union and in any of the food outlets on campus. The meal card CANNOT be used in the bookstore or off campus, though there are many inexpensive off campus restaurants to choose from close by.
-
There are three coffee houses on and near the campus. On University Avenue there is a Starbucks and Deja Brew and in the Union there is a Java Lounge. You can only use your meal card at Java Lounge in the Union.
-
There are many things to do and see in Gainesville including Devil’s Milhopper, a Florida sink hole and nature preserve with walking paths, and UF’s own Bat House, overlooking Lake Alice where many live alligators live!
-
There is a Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club on N 13th Street and a Wal-Mart and Target on Archer Road. (consult the map of Gainesville link) The Oaks Mall is located on Newberry Road, near I-75. There is a Books-a-Million on Newberry Road and a Barnes and Noble on Archer Road
